TUMBLR TEXANS!!!

Heads up: Congress is debating a budget plan that would be devastating to Texas. Will you pass this along?

Senators John Cornyn and Kay Hutchison need to hear from all of us about it right now, before they cut a deal in the next few days.

Please spread the word about all of these proposed cuts to Texas:

  • $98 million would be cut from federal funds for clean and safe water in Texas.1
  • 12,000 Texas children would be immediately cut from Head Start, which provides comprehensive early childhood development services for at-risk children ages zero to five.2
  • $391 million would be cut from Pell Grants, affecting all 664,000 higher education students with those grants in Texas.3
  • Job training and employment services would be effectively eliminated for 5,800 dislocated workers, 99,000 low-income adults, and 16,000 youths age 14 to 21.4
  • $10 million would be cut from law enforcement assistance, taking cops off the beat.5

It’s especially galling when the same budget protects tax breaks for corporations like GE and the very rich.

Just last night the news broke that Congress may be close to striking a deal on the budget. Now is the only time we can influence the outcome.

Can you call Sens. Cornyn and Hutchison and ask them to oppose these cuts in the budget? You can pick one of the cuts in this list to highlight in your call.

Senator John Cornyn
Phone: 202-224-2934

Senator Kay Hutchison
Phone: 202-224-5922

The cuts that the Republicans are proposing would disproportionately hit those who can least afford it in Texas, and it’s up to us to stop them.

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support our work? We’re entirely funded by our 5 million members—no corporate contributions, no big checks from CEOs. And our tiny staff ensures that small contributions go a long way. Chip in here.

Imagine if tea party Republicans were in charge of everything—without President Obama to veto their worst bills. That's pretty much the situation in 20 states—including Texas—and what we're seeing is absolutely horrifying.

In Texas, Republicans want to bully women into getting an unnecessary sonogram before an abortion, force mass lay-offs of teachers, and make it harder for students, seniors, and poor people to vote. And across the country, millions of poor and disabled seniors are being dumped from Medicaid.

The clock is ticking: With just a couple weeks left in many state legislative sessions, Republican politicians across the country are racing to pass the most extreme right-wing bills while they still can.

That’s why we’ve launched a major new initiative to fight back against the worst Republican officials—but we need to raise $200,000 to make sure we have the resources to take on so many fights at once.

Can you chip in $5 right now?

Here’s the plan: To take on the right-wing assault in so many different states and communities, we’ve launched a whole new online organizing platform called SignOn.org.

SignOn.org allows local progressive organizations and leaders to run their own MoveOn-style campaigns by creating online petitions, sending timely email alerts to their grassroots supporters, and connecting with other local progressives who can help.

By linking MoveOn’s online organizing know-how with the best local progressive leaders, we will have the grassroots muscle we need to win. Here are some great examples of SignOn at work:

  • In Florida, pro-choice Representative Scott Randolph used SignOn to fight back against a raft of bills attacking abortion rights.
  • In Pennsylvania, a coalition of progressive leaders are using SignOn to stop Governor Tom Corbett from cutting one billion dollars from public schools.
  • And in Maine, more than 18,000 people have signed a SignOn petition supporting legislation to allow voters to recall the state’s tea party governor, Paul LePage.

But there are so many more fights we need to take on—and the repercussions of these fights go far beyond each state’s borders, because a terrible law passed in one state often becomes a model for others, like Arizona’s radical anti-immigration law.

It’s only with the support of our members that we can follow through on all these key fights.

Click here to chip in $5—or as much as you can

Someone firebombed a Planned Parenthood clinic in McKinney, Texas, late Tuesday night. Because it was so late, no one was hurt. The clinic doesn’t provide abortions, but there had been protesters there earlier that day anyway. You might’ve read about the news on Twitter or on a liberal blog. Probably not in a newspaper or on a cable new channel. Definitely not at any right-wing blogs. Which is a bit odd, actually, considering how much attention terrorist attacks generally get in this country. Oh, sorry, how much attention possible Islamic terrorist attacks get.

Really anti-choicers? Really? REALLY?  I mean WTF PEOPLE, you are literally targeting a FREE HEALTH CLINIC. One that not only doesn’t even provide abortions, but probably does a whole lot more to prevent abortion and unplanned pregnancy than you ever will.

ARE YOU WILLING TO ADMIT YET THAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY AGAINST THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF HUMAN BEINGS? ARE YOU? HMMM?

Or perhaps that you are just ignorant of REALITY?

Just how can this be justified in any way?

Anti-choicers don’t give a flying fuck about people. We all know that.

I live IN Texas and didn’t hear about this until now. Yay, censorship!

What drought? Texan turns air into water

His machine — patent pending — is called The Droughtmaster (not to be confused with the breed of cattle that shares the same name; MOO!).

And Willie Nelson is among its biggest fans.

Here’s how it works.

[M]oisture-laden air is pulled through the machine’s generator, condenses it and then exhausts the purified air.  The captured water is then filtered and is actually drinkable. The patent pending machine is now on the market and plugs into an electric outlet. It can produce five to seven gallons a day.

Southeast Texas has no shortage of hot, moist air, but is this stuff safe to drink? Actual scientists say it sure is! Testing shows that the water produced is similar to “sterilized distilled water.”

They should be using this/ implementing this at this moment in the Horn of Africa.

Honestly, Texas is in a drought, but guess what? So is the Horn of Africa? Which situation is worse guys?

Did you just read the headline and get pissed off or…?

It was invented in Texas. Its patent is pending. There’s probably only one or two prototypes even in existence at this point.* They’re not walking up and down Main Street handing out Droughtmasters down here.

Geez.

Sometimes I think people [on Tumblr] go out looking to be offended.

PS: What makes life in Africa more important than life in Texas? In Maine? In Spain? A human being is a human being and we should all be treated equally; there’s no such thing as who needs basic necessities “more.” We need water to live. That’s pretty much one of the only things every human has in common.

PSS: Is there enough humidity in the Horn of Africa for the Droughtmaster to work? Because that’s one of the main reasons it’s successful here. Just a thought. I could Google Africa’s weather but meh.

PSSS: Do they have electric outlets in the places that would benefit most from the Droughtmaster? I tried to look that up but didn’t find the answer I wanted.

For anyone actually interested in the Droughtmaster, I found a rather informative video.

* = after finding/watching that video I learned Willie Nelson has 50 and Governor Good Hair owns one, but otherwise, they’re exclusive; they aren’t being tossed off firetrucks like Mardi Gras beads or anything.

Rick Perry Supports Criminalizing Gay Sex

feministslut:

steviemcfly:

Wow. And I didn’t think anyone could actually be worse than Bachmann.

and I thought he couldn’t get worse. It’s not good when he keeps proving me wrong.

This is a widely known (and supported) fact among the Republicans I’ve met/discussed it with. I was told once that Perry’s views on this issue earned the votes of an entire family.

I clicked my Fire Activity link hoping and praying to see fewer dots...no such luck. I'm praying as hard as I can for the people who've lost everything, the firefighters and volunteers working SO hard, the people who may still lose everything, and rain. I hope you'll take the time to say a quick prayer/send a positive thought, too.

Smoke is settling in here. What a horrible reminder that SO many have lost their homes and livelihoods. It’s absolutely heartbreaking, watching your state burn down—even if you state is problem-riddled politically, it’s still home.

A lot of innocent people are losing everything and all I can due is watch the news and pray the fires don’t move any closer to my parent’s (or my) home.

The entire state needs rain. SO many firefighters and volunteers need water donations and rest that they won’t be getting any time soon it seems. I almost feel like Texas needs a miracle at this point. Every time I look at the Fire Activity map there are more dots.

Nearly 1,000 homes gone in the past 2 days. Thousands and thousands of acres scorched—so many I’ve actually lost count. Texas Forest Service says “In the past seven days Texas Forest Service has responded to 181 fires for 118,413 acres” but that number is constantly increasing, as the lack of humidity and moderate winds are fueling the flames faster than volunteers can contain them.

This really f*cking sucks.
