A group in Kentucky is trying to make sure that no child goes without his or her own birthday cake. The all-volunteer group, Sweet Blessings, delivers specially made cakes to children who are suffering a life-threatening disease or are part of a family in crisis. NBC’s John Yang has the story.

As a kid who only remembers having one birthday cake, this story has brought me to tears and inspired me very much.

I wonder if I offered to make cakes for kids of low-income families [in my town] if anyone would accept.

I’ve said before I wanted to open a soup kitchen, but I need to start smaller.

Clearly I am not skilled to make such fancy cakes as those in the video, but let’s be honest, a simple cupcake tastes just as good as a well decorated one. Besides, the more I practice the better I’ll get! And at the end of the day, it really is the thought that counts.

Sixty children will undergo free facial reconstructive surgery over the next two weeks, the Smile Foundation said on Monday.

I was fine ‘til I got to the grocery store part, then the tears came. Now I want to take the cash I got for selling my truck yesterday and randomly pay for people’s groceries!

Family raises $55,000 for son’s bone marrow transplant, thanks to Reddit

Stories like this are why. I mean, just look at his little face in the second photo! That makes all the sifting through the bad news worth it.

Secret Santas paying off strangers’ layaway accounts

positive-press-daily:

Last Monday, a woman in her 30s walked into a Kmart in Michigan and asked to pay off someone’s layaway balance. Although the clerk wasn’t sure what was going on, he let her look at the store’s layaway list. The woman scanned the accounts, looking for ones in which toys had been purchased. She chose three accounts and paid $500 toward them, leaving a balance of $10 on each. The woman asked to remain anonymous, but she did leave a note. It read, “Happy Holidays from a friend.”

One of the people helped out by the secret Santa, a mom who had put $200 worth of toys on layaway for her son, said that the anonymous woman had “restored her faith in people.”

The Christmas spirit is catching on. Since the story of the secret Santa first aired on WOOD TV in Michigan, other anonymous helpers have been paying off the layaway accounts of strangers at other stores in Michigan and California.

The Michigan store where the first good Samaritan offered her help has received similar donations of $150 to $300 every day since then, according to The Detroit News.

One man came in and gave $2,000 to help pay off 13 layaway bills. Another paid off $1,000. In every case, those who are doing the giving are opting to remain anonymous.

No, we’re not crying at all, whatever do you mean?

That’s a whopper of a lie, I’m bawling like a hungry infant.

In Philipsburg, Montana, folks help each other survive everything — even cancer

In 2003, Mike Cutler was diagnosed with cancer — leukemia — and needed a costly stem cell transplant. “One day I came back from a golf tournament and here’s this great big tent, you know? Like you see at the circuses.” Mike’s eyes grew moist with memory. “I could not believe the amount of people.”

People all over the valley donated meals, and nearly everybody showed up to buy them. They handed him a check. “Close to $40,000,” Cutler said.

All that money for Mike Cutler was raised in one day.  He pondered that amazing achievement.  Finally, a soft smile warmed his face. “It takes a community to keep the community.”

A few years later, in the depths of a recession, the neighbors rallied again. This time the handful of folks in Granite County raised another bundle of cash to save the Cutler family — $100,000. Mike’s 9-year-old daughter Sydney needed surgery for brain cancer.

How could a county with more cows than people come up with a hundred grand in the midst of a recession? Ranch manager Phil Shields said, “They gave from their hearts and they gave from their souls.”

More than that: Neighbors donated things others needed to buy anyway. Shields put a cattle chute up for auction. It wasn’t offered just out of the goodness of his heart.

“Most of us figured if there was no town, there’d be no people. So we saved ourselves, is what we did.”

Child sends Santa a note attached to two balloons and gets an answer

Five-year-old Helen Berence Reyes Cardenas didn’t ask for much.  Her family, struggling, could not afford a real Christmas this year.  She asked for a doll, clothes and shoes.

She put her Christmas list in a letter attached to two balloons and set it free in hopes of it reaching the North Pole. Little did she know her own personal Santa was waiting 676 miles away on a small ranch in Laytonville, Calif.

If y’all think this is good, wait til the video of the soldier who pretended to be Santa to grant his kid’s Christmas wish posts. I wept.

socialistexan:

I know people like to try to dismiss protests and boycotts of the Salvation Army especially when “they do so much good, and besides, lighten up, they are a private private charity with huge influence, you think you not donating will hurt them?”

Actually yes, yes it will, especially if a lot of “us” can take down them. I don’t agree with their bigoted and ignorant policies, they won’t get my money. All that “good” that they do doesn’t negate the transwoman they let freeze to death in the street, or the gay couples they forced to break up and be forced into their beliefs just so they can live another day.

Yeah, they are a private entity, but that doesn’t give them the right to decide who lives and who dies, especially when they have the capability.

Whenever one of the SA bell-ringers asks me for a donation I always answer with something about giving my money to a charity that helps everyone instead. Sometimes they know what I am referring to and they get upset and glare at me. Sometimes they don’t know, and I educate them. More than once they have called someone to come take their place because they didn’t want to participate anymore.

Differences are being made, slowly but surely.
