Police pen up and mace female “Occupy Wall Street” protesters

In a disturbing scene from today’s “Occupy Wall Street” protests, a group of peaceful female protesters were rounded up in an orange-colored mesh pen by police and subsequently sprayed with mace without any provocation.

In spite of multiple reported incidents of possible police violence, major media outlets seem to be content to let the protests go by completely unreported, following the same “who-cares” attitude they have taken toward recent revelations that the NYPD has violated the Constitutional rights of American citizens by spying on them as possible terrorists and enemies of the state despite a complete absence of evidence of any crimes.

This is absolutely disturbing. Penning people up to mace them is police brutality. Period. What will it take to get the mainstream media to pay attention? If you follow the #OccupyWallStreet, you’ll find out that at least 80 were arrested today. AP and Wall Street Journal mentioned the arrests briefly today.

wowwww

Annnnd this is exactly why I decided to GTFO of there. Call me a pansy deserter but they were fucking people up all over Union Square today. I’m afraid of what’s gonna happen tonight, as Zucotti Park is surrounded by 100+ cops right now.

This needs more notes. Sick.

PASS THIS ON! PEOPLE NEED TO SEE AND BE AWARE! DEMOCRACY DOESNT EXIST WHERE MARSHALL LAW FLOURISHES!

Just another example that the Constitution only counts when it benefits the rich, white men in power.

We are watching the beginnings of the defiant self-assertion of a new generation of Americans, a generation who are looking forward to finishing their education with no jobs, no future, but still saddled with enormous and unforgivable debt. Most, I found, were of working-class or otherwise modest backgrounds, kids who did exactly what they were told they should: studied, got into college, and are now not just being punished for it, but humiliated – faced with a life of being treated as deadbeats, moral reprobates.

Occupy Wall Street News Round Up of the Day: A week after the “occupation” of Wall Street began with a “Day of Rage,” the peaceful demonstration took a turn for the violent as tensions between police and protesters boiled over.
Between 80 and 100 members of the so-called “99 percent” were arrested for impeding traffic; some were charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. According to protest spokesman Patrick Bruner, the police response was “exceedingly violent.”
Bruner’s claim appears to be confirmed in footage from the Financial District and surrounding areas showing mostly unprovoked altercations between NYPD officers and demonstrators.

“I was shocked because it seemed like one person after another was being brutally tackled, and it wasn’t clear why,” rally attendee Meaghan Linick told the New York Daily News. “I was deeply disturbed to see them throw a man [down] and immediately they were pounding on him. Their arms were going back in the air. I couldn’t believe how violent five people needed to be against one unarmed man.”
Perhaps the most egregious incident involving excessive force came after NYPD officers began kettling protesters with orange police nets. In a video posted to YouTube, a uniformed officer can clearly be seen approaching a corralled group of women and macing them without warning or provocation, before quickly leaving the scene (see below).

In a statement to CBS New York, the NYPD said every arrest made was “justified.” The official Occupy Wall Street website is demanding jail time for the police officer responsible for pepper spraying the barricaded women.
Ironically, by attempting to curb the protesters’ continued Wall Street presence, the police may have unwittingly supplied the “diffuse and leaderless convocation of activists against greed, corporate influence, gross social inequality and other nasty byproducts of wayward capitalism” with the “infusion of energy” they had long hoped for.

This is going to get worse. This has all been planned, it’s just coming to public fruition. It’s simple….
“Bankrupt” America —> Create widespread middle class job shortage while simultaneously taxing the living hell out of the poor —> Keep promising change; change never happens —> People become eventually upset (rightfully so) —> Anger and poverty bubbles over into the first small, and peaceful, protest/rallies —> Peaceful protesters are arrested for absolutely no reason, even police are unable to explain why, but their orders come from superiors with no explanation —> People become more angry —> Resulting in larger, and more widespread protests, due to unjust actions of the Police force, which are trickling down vaguely from higher government —> Protests actually DO become violent —> Government uses it as an example to instill fear that will help them take away MORE of our civil liberties.
It’s. Only. Going. To. Get. Worse. - You can absolutely count on it.
I sobbed while watching the videos of this last night - I don’t want to live in this world, but I have no choice.
I don’t want to sound harsh but I’m going to, and that’s that. This is our new reality. Educate yourselves on how to MAKE the government listen (join the ACLU, volunteer with activist groups, make contacts). Learn the pragmatic skills of neutralizing pepper spray (baking soda/water/milk in a spray bottle will help), getting out of zip ties (lots of Youtube videos on this), improvising weapons if you need to (but not as a first resort, of course). Don’t assume any more that any “authority” figure has your best interest at heart, don’t think they’ll hesitate before “making an example” of you. Do not stop taking to the streets just because they are brutal, just learn to get around the brutality. My heart goes out to all the people who were beaten and abused at the rallies, but I am also damned proud that they were there- and I hope this doesn’t stop them.

Meet NYPD Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna, former Commanding Officer of the First Precinct and a leader of the violent brute squad who maced a group of unarmed, nonviolent women during the Wall Street protest.

I love that this pig’s name is Tony Baloney. How perfect is that?

According to this little puff piece, Tony Baloney is a typical douchebag from Staten Island who couldn’t hack it running a deli, wasn’t smart enough to become a teacher, and so instead became a piece of shit cop where he rose through the ranks as a narc, a rat, and an all around asshole.

Of course, no one should be the least bit surprised that Tony Baloney is the kind of thick skulled dickbag that the NYPD promotes to a command position, nor should anyone be surprised when the NYPD does absolutely nothing to discipline him for his brutality.

I guess we’ll all just have to settle for making Tony Baloney the poster boy for the American police state. He really is a perfect fit, isn’t he?

If you’d like to contact him, here is his publicly available personal information, including a land line phone number and home address.

From Reddit, where the comments are also worth reading:

Guys, listen. Here’s the deal.

I love you guys with every shred of my hard-left leaning heart. But I think you might be doing something wrong. Here is one thing that can help you.

Tomorrow, wear a polo and khakis

Seriously. polos and khakis. Every time you guys DO finally get some fucking press, it’s a scrawny dude with dreads in a ratty t-shirt. You’re going big here, dress it. Tomorrow, Polo shirt and Khakis.

Why? Because you need to get the right-leaning equivalent of me on your side. I’m 35 right now. I understand where the hippy thing comes from. I get it as well as a guy who’s 35 can. My Counterparts do not. They think you are scummy druggies on welfare and when they see on tv a bunch of people who they think are S.D’s on W, they root for the cops to hit you again.

Speaking of the cops, Who do you think they’ll mace first? SD’s on W, or a guy in khakis and a polo? Seriously, it’s fucking cop camouflage. And if they DO come for you. When people at home see PEOPLE THAT LOOK LIKE THEMgetting abused by police… That’s when shit changes.

Seeing protesters get beat up means nothing because protesters get beat up all the time. Therefore, don’t look like a protester! This connects you to the person watching and opens them to your side!

So for serious. Do it. You’re almost about to tip this thing over. Polos and khakis. Cop Camo + target audience = Shave, shower and polos and khakis.

TL;DR: Polo shirt and Khakis = dress code for nyc protests tomorrow.

Do it.

Edit: Going to bed soon, one more thing before I turn it over to all of you.

Please spread this as much as you can. Professionalism will help push this thing over the edge. You have labor pushing you. National Media is starting to wake up to you. You’re almost there. Keep pushing.

Think: Business Casual Friday. Don’t play it up like the Billionaires for healthcare. You’re just a guy, going to work in this big office building here.

Even if you don’t think that you SHOULD be judged on appearances (which I do agree), You have to realize that you ARE. Fight the appearance fight another day. Polos and khakis.

Do it.

Why exactly should they have to conform to you? If you believe in the message go fucking join them because you believe in the message, don’t make them wear cloths that fit you or your jackass friends’ sense of decency. The protest will gain momentum when people like you (who wear khakis and polos) join the movement, not when the people who are already there put on costumes.

God forbid you get seen with “those scummy druggies.” Stand with them if you agree, don’t stand near them and go “well we’d all be more comfortable, and would stand closer, if you got a haircut.”

-Joe

I could be wrong on this, but something about it just rubs me the wrong way.

You wouldn’t go to a job interview wearing shorts and a tank-top, no one would take you seriously. He’s right. You want people to take you seriously, you have to dress the part. You want people to sympathize with you and pay attention, you have to get their attention positively.

I would if I was interviewing at a surf shop, I wouldn’t if I was going into interview for a desk job. But if I’m standing up for what I believe in I’m going to dress as I am. Let the people who already dress in khakis and polos come on down.

The part I’m dressing for is a pissed off member of the 99%, which shouldn’t have a dress code to be “presentable.” I think this is where this line of thought breaks down, you perceive that the people out on the street are wearing hippy costumes and you are just hoping for a wardrobe change.

-Joe

I’m just wondering who’s paying for all these polos and khakis? Isn’t the whole point of the protest exposing the fail that is America’s distribution of wealth/the lack of jobs/the crazy debt people are in because they got loans to get a degree that’s basically worthless?

The 99% wears raggedy clothes because that’s what the 99% has, I suspect.

I had wondered whether the 99% owned khakis and polos (I don't), but I think the underlying idea is still valid. I've got things in my closet I could wear and be taken seriously, if everyone dug into their closets to find something acceptable for a job interview (and you know we've all got one of those!) it would be a major shock. If for no other reason than to befuddle the cops, having nearly everyone show up looking "normal" would be awesome. It can't hurt to try.

I suppose there were bits of a good point in that post, but it mostly came across as privileged to me, hence my two cents. Not everyone has a closet full of nice things; some don’t have any nice things. I personally own exactly 5 shirts that don’t have holes or stains, and I only very recently purchased them (for the purpose of job hunting. Is that irony? *shrug*)

It also read as a bit insulting; almost reinforcing the “dirty hippie” stereotype. Those people aren’t there to look nice for the media, they are there to have their voices heard. I think Joe, via stfuconservatives, said it best:

“I mean there are pilots down there in full uniform but the dialogue is not about those people the dialogue is about some hippies getting maced. This guy thinks he’s unlocked the secret but he’s really just complaining about the storyline that he has bought into.

Even if this guy’s plan went into action and most of the protesters decided to “dress conservatively” you would never see it, you will still turn on the tv and see the guy with dreadlocks beating a drum.”

I’m glad people are talking about it, though. The more people post here and on Twitter/reddit/Facebook the more the dialogue will expand and the better chance we have for change.

What appears to be about 1,000 Occupy Wall Street protestors have marched part of the way across the Brooklyn Bridge, stopped eastbound traffic, and are staying put under the western arches of the bridge with a heavy police presence.

For a while, cars were stopped waiting for the march to continue, but they have all now turned around and gone the wrong way back west to Manhattan. For a moment it was a site to behold as a couple dozen cars made awkward U-turns in the narrow lanes, facing in all directions at once. Traffic on the other side, westbound, is fine.

It’s been going on for about 15 minutes on the bridge so far, and some protesters seem to be trickling back to Manhattan.

According to Occupy Wall Street organizers at least 20 people have already been arrested. Here’s the live stream for closeups.

And I’m posting a few more pics, including one with the full arches visible to my twitter feed, @alexgoldmark, since this Tumblr seems very slow at loading now.

and this still isn’t receiving as much media attention as it should. i saw fox news had been covering it last night, but since fox news isn’t a news source, i don’t think it really counts.

ACCORDING TO THE LIVE STREAM

350 still trapped, 75 confirmed arrests, city sending in buses for the trapped and arrested protesters

Holy shit.

If you’re not pissed off, you’re not paying attention.

I AM SO FUCKING ANGRY

IT’S CALLED FREEDOM OF ASSEMBLY

FUCKING SERIOUSLY

WHY THE FUCK AM I SEEING/READING ABOUT PEOPLE ARRESTED

THIS GIRL HAS TO BE YOUNGER THAN 15

SHE’S WEARING AN INVADER ZIM HAT FFS

THIS IS THE BIGGEST CROCK OF SHIT I HAVE EVER WITNESSED

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK THE POLICE!!!!!

Here’s a link to a live stream for anyone who’d like to be a furious as I am.

It’s super fun being angry/feeling betrayed by your government.

OCCUPY DALLAS

The girl who got arrested was only 13. Its disgusting. I'm not even American (I'm Scottish) but I'm with you and complete solidarity to the protesters. The rest of the world is watching the establishment show their true colours now.

13?! Ugh. I’m so angry. I just found the closest Occupy location to me, and I’m going. There’s no way I can’t, having seen what I’ve seen today.

Thanks for your support. <3  We need it now more than ever, I’m afraid.

thecakesokay reblogged your post: I AM SO FUCKING ANGRY

know! It’s just… FUCK. It’s bullshit how they allow the protestors to go part way somewhere, and then cut them off at…

It’s being reported that NYPD gave protestors a YES to cross the bridge, then stopped them in the middle so they could make arrests from both sides. This “maneuver” was apparently pre-planned.

Well guess what, coppers? You’re just making we peaceful protestors plan more, too. The Dallas occupation has 3 days of orientation prior to the march on the Federal Reserve building. How ‘bout them apples?
