BREAKING NEWS: House Passes LGBT-Inclusive Violence Against Women Act
Today the U.S. House passed the Senate-approved version of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) that includes important protections for LGBT individuals.
The bill was passed 78 to 22 in a bipartisan Senate vote and today’s 286 to 138 vote included 87 Republicans.
Today’s victory marks a rare occasion when Republicans and Democrats came together to ensure explicit protections in the federal code for “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.” It is also the first time that any federal non-discrimination provisions include the LGBT community.
President Obama has pledged to sign the bill which prohibits any program or activity funded by the bill from discriminating against a victim based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. It also explicitly includes LGBT victims in two key VAWA grant programs.
HRC lobbied to include the language in the Senate bill and urged House members to pass the inclusive language as well.

They want us all to think that they are de-funding Planned Parenthood (and other abortion/birth control suppliers) on ~moral~ grounds, but the fact of the matter is, for every $1 in child support a custodial parent receives, the state gets $2—plus bonuses. They have since 1998.
When someone is forced to have a child that they don’t want/aren’t equipped to provide for, and the relationship that created the child doesn’t work out, the state of Texas profits (even if the parents end up in different states; two states working together to collect payment both receive credit—aka: payment—from the federal government.)
I firmly believe this is why Texas officials rally against abortion 100%, even in cases of r*pe and inc*st; the way the child was created is of no consequence to them, so long as it breaths, it has a dollar value.
For every $1 the state of Texas spends chasing non-custodial parents, they collect $9.92 in child support. Double that, and you get bank—the feds served up about $5.4 billion in 2009. [page 5]
No one is thinking of Christ or the children over on Congress Avenue, they are thinking of their coffers.
…
(This is not to say that child support is not necessary, it is, this is to say that there are deeper reasons behind the anti-choice sentiment in this state than, “Jesus wants us to save the little babies!”)
((* = I’ve only researched the state I live in and have had experience with, though the incentive program was implemented in all 50. This recent story out of Kansas about a man being forced to pay support for a child conceived using his sperm donation only serves to prove my point that in some states, collecting support has very little to do with the welfare of the families involved, and everything to do with how much the state can benefit.))
I’m really loving all of these articles about how if weren’t for black people, Hispanics, single women, and gays and lesbians Romney would have won. It’s almost as if these people’s votes have the same value as white men’s votes! What a world!

Did you try your county registrar to see where you can go? I’m sure you did. Idk. Hug?
There’s a very specific list of locations on the courthouse window, next to the sign I took a picture of. (I didn’t take a picture of it for privacy reasons.)
That’s why I’m so furious…I WENT to the place that THREE different sources told me to go to. [The card in the mail, my voter registration card, and our city’s website. There are 4 sources if you count the sign on the courthouse…5 if you count the person inside that directed me back to the Community Center!]
Even Google tells me to go to the CC!

Sandy, please call 1-866-OUR VOTE and visit 866ourvote.org/state/t… They can and will help you with this problem. VOTE!!!! Let your voice and your conviction be heard!!!! Do NOT take No for an answer!!!!
That’s actually the site I used to make sure that I was registered/update my address/find the place I was supposed to go for early voting! I HATE talking on the phone, so I’m filling out the online “I had a problem voting” form, complete with a link to the pictures.
What also sucks is, the CC is the ONLY location listed for Precinct 1, while all the other precincts have numerous polling places (that were open not only for early voting, but will also be open tomorrow.)
I just…I’m at a loss. I cannot believe this shit is happening/has probably been happening for a long time before I moved to this part of town.
In closing, I feel like this is my current GPOY:

Today I took the time to obtain photographic evidence as to why:
I got this in the mail a couple of weeks ago; I set it aside with my voter registration card.
Friday morning I went to 500 E. Whatever to find this:
I tried to go inside to ask, “What the shit, dudes?!?!” but the door was locked. (I’m not surprised, as the “L. Community Center” is not a Community Center at all, but a “nice,” “historical” place that can be rented for special occasions.)
Of course my next step was making the 2 block trip to the Courthouse, where I saw:
I went inside and asked, “What the shit, dudes?!?!” and was told to return to the Community Center—the place that has the sign telling me to vote at the Courthouse—on Tuesday.
I guess all of us* in Precinct 1 are shit out of luck?
*Statistically, the people in Precinct 1 are all poor, and most of them are people of color. (I’m not saying that this is some racist, classist, Republican, vote-blocking bullshit, but I’m not not saying that, either.)

‘You Don’t Own Me’ PSA of the Day: The latest opposition to the GOP’s War On Women is led by 1960s teen idol Lesley Gore, who recruited some well-known indie female faces — Lena Dunham, Carrie Brownstein, Miranda July, Tavi Gevinson, Tracey Ross and more — for a “wicked lip-dub protest version” of her 1964 hit “You Don’t Own Me.”

- Last Day to Apply for a Ballot By Mail – October 30th
- Last Day of Early Voting – November 2nd

Verify your registration – Think you’re registered? If you did not receive a voter registration card, there may be an inaccuracy on your voter registration, such as an old address, wrong zip code, or simply a typo. You can check to make sure your registration listing is correct by clicking here
Do I need to bring an ID?
Yes, however the types of ID that are acceptable for voting in Texas are very broad. You may vote with any of the following forms of ID:
- Your voter registration card (whether current or expired)
- A driver’s license or personal identification card issued to you by the Texas Department of Public Safety. You may also bring a similar document issued to you by an agency of another state, even if the license or card has expired;
- A form of identification that contains your photograph and establishes your identity;
- A birth certificate or other document confirming birth that is admissible in a court of law and establishes the person’s identity;
- Your United States citizenship papers;
- Your United States passport;
- Official mail addressed to you by a governmental entity; or
- A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address.
The Photo Voter ID legislation (SB 14) is not in place because it has not received preclearance (see the heading Voter ID on the Voter Empowerment Project page for more details).
*There are some people who will need to present an ID in addition to their voter registration card. Known as “ID voters”, these are individuals who registered to vote by mail and either did not provide a Texas Drivers License or Social Security Number or the numbers could not be matched. These voters will need to show ID in addition even if they have their voter registration card. It does not need to be a photo ID.
What should I bring?
The most important thing you should bring is your voter registration card. Your card has all of the information on it that the election workers need to make sure you are in the right place and that you get the right ballot. If you do not have your registration card, that’s ok. You can bring any of the acceptable forms of identification named here
You should also bring this “Know Your Rights” flyer with you in case you have any problems.
- TIP: If you do not have your registration card, log on to either the Secretary of State’s www.votetexas.gov website or you county’s elections website, pull up your registration record, print it out and take it with you. That way if the election worker can’t find you on the list, you have documentation that shows the exact name and address at which you are registered.
What happens at the polls?
- The election workers will ask to see your voter registration card or other form of ID.
- You will be asked to verify that you still live at the address at which you are registered. NOTE: If you answer that you do not, you may not be able to vote at that location, depending on whether or not you have moved within the county or across county lines. See here for additional information on what to do if you have moved.
